The Admissions Process

You are not "checking into rehab." You are making one of the bravest decisions of your life, and our admissions team treats it that way. Here is exactly what happens when you call (209) 734-9588:

  1. Confidential phone assessment -- A licensed clinician listens to your situation without judgment. No scripts, no pressure. We ask about your substance use history, mental health, and what you need right now.
  2. Insurance verification -- We contact your insurance provider directly and explain your coverage clearly, including any out-of-pocket costs. No surprises.
  3. Clinical recommendation -- Based on your assessment, our team recommends the right level of care: medical detox (3-7 days), residential treatment (30-90 days), or outpatient (8-12 weeks).
  4. Arrival coordination -- We help arrange travel to our Redwood City campus, walk you through what to bring, and answer every question you or your family have.
  5. Warm welcome -- When you arrive, you are greeted by staff who already know your name and your plan. No cold waiting rooms. No clipboard interrogations.

Most people can begin treatment within 24 to 48 hours of their first call. If you are in crisis, we move faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my employer find out I am in treatment?

This is one of the most common fears we hear, and we get it — the worry about professional consequences can feel almost as heavy as the addiction itself. The short answer is no. Your treatment records are protected under federal HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 regulations, which are actually stricter than standard medical privacy laws. We cannot disclose anything to your employer without your explicit written consent. Many of our patients in the Redwood City area are working professionals, and they return to their jobs without anyone knowing unless they choose to share.

I am not sure I am "bad enough" for rehab — is treatment really for me?

We hear this one a lot, and honestly, the fact that you are even asking the question tells you something important. There is no threshold of suffering you have to cross before you deserve help. Addiction is a medical condition with a spectrum, and the research is clear that earlier intervention leads to better outcomes. You do not need to lose your home, your family, or your health before treatment makes sense. If substances are causing problems in your life — even quietly — you belong here.

What if I have tried treatment before and it did not work?

First, that does not mean you failed — it means the approach was not right for you at that time. Recovery is rarely a straight line, and most people who achieve long-term sobriety have had multiple treatment experiences before it clicks. At TMH in Redwood City, we start by understanding what happened in your previous treatment: what helped, what fell short, what was missing. Then we build a plan around you specifically, not a one-size-fits-all curriculum. A different approach at a different moment in your life can make all the difference.

How do you handle the shame and embarrassment that comes with asking for help?

Let us be real with you: shame is the number one thing that keeps people from picking up the phone, and we think about that every single day. From the moment you contact us, our team is trained to meet you without judgment — no lectures, no disappointed looks, no "how did you let it get this far." We treat substance use disorder as the medical condition it is, because that is what the science says it is. You would not feel ashamed of treating a heart condition, and this is no different. Every person on our staff chose this work because they believe people deserve compassion, not stigma.

Can I still be a good parent while in residential treatment?

This question breaks our hearts a little, because behind it is usually a parent who is already putting their kids first by considering getting well. Yes, you can be a good parent and be in treatment — in fact, getting help is one of the most loving things you can do for your children. Our Redwood City program includes scheduled family time, phone access for daily check-ins with your kids, and family therapy sessions that help you rebuild those relationships with professional support. Many of our patients say that treatment gave them the tools to finally be the parent they always wanted to be.

What does insurance actually cover, and will you help me figure it out?

Navigating insurance when you are already overwhelmed is the last thing you need to do alone. We accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicaid, Medicare, First Health Network, Cigna, Oscar Health, and MultiPlan. When you call us at (209) 734-9588, our admissions team verifies your benefits and walks you through exactly what is covered — in plain language, not insurance jargon. If you do not have insurance, ask us about payment options. We will figure it out together.
